Empty nest, full policy: What to change when the kids move out

So, the kids have flown the coop. You’ve got 1 studying in another city, another who’s moved in with friends, and suddenly you’re left with extra bedrooms, a quieter fridge, no fights over the remote, and (let’s be honest) a slightly heavier heart. But while you’re adjusting to life without late-night lifts and piles of laundry, your insurance also deserves a little adjustment.

Why? Because your lifestyle has changed. And insurance, unlike your mother-in-law’s advice, should always match your real life.

1. Fewer drivers, fewer risks

If your child was listed as a regular driver on your car insurance but no longer uses your wheels, it’s time to update your policy. Fewer drivers often result in a lower risk profile, which could mean a sweeter premium. Talk to us, let’s see what could happen.

2. Do a home contents reality check

When the kids leave, they sometimes take furniture, laptops, or appliances with them. And they do it without asking. Also, ‘sometimes’ is our way of being nice. It’s all the time, right? Right. Okay, so when this happens it means the value of your home contents has changed. Do a quick audit and give us a call. You can even WhatsApp us and we’ll update your royal home contents insurance to make sure you’re paying for what’s still in your castle… And not for that Xbox that now lives in your son’s digs.

3. Think about cover for where they are now

If your kids are renting a flat or staying in res, they’ll need their own protection for gadgets and valuables. Talk to them about getting affordable portable possessions cover. It’s a grown-up move that could save them from a nasty financial mess later.

4. Car insurance shifts

Did your child take their car with them? Did they take your car with them? Either way, this is the right time to double-check that the risk address on the car insurance policy matches the car’s new home base. Remember, insurance (no matter who you’re with) is all about accuracy. So, if the car now lives in Pretoria instead of PE, your policy needs to say so.

5. Rework personal accident cover

Some parents choose to scale down extra benefits like personal accident cover once the kids leave, while others keep it for peace of mind when family visits. Either way, this is the season to review what you’re paying for and decide what makes sense for your ‘new normal’.

6. Don’t forget you

Your insurance isn’t just about protecting your kids. With an emptier house, you may be investing more in hobbies, travel, or renovations. Chat to us about adjusting your cover to match your lifestyle upgrades.

The bottom line? The king has your back

Life changes. Your insurance should change with it, surely? Well, it’s what we believe. If you’re embracing your new empty nest, now’s the perfect time to spring-clean your policies. Update your details, cut what you don’t need, and make sure what matters most is still royally protected.

And remember: Whether your kids are 5 minutes down the road or 500km away, King Price will always have your back (and your castle’s).
