A word from the king

Our blog… Blah blah blah

What if your radio is worth more than your car?

These days, car sound systems are a whole vibe. Whether you’ve got a premium factory-fitted setup or went all out with a custom subwoofer and amp combo, your sound system might be 1 of the most valuable parts of your ride. So, here’s the question… Is it covered by your car insurance?

We can tell you right now, if your radio or custom audio system isn’t listed as a specified item, chances are you’re not covered for theft or damage. And with some sound systems costing tens of thousands of rands, that’s a pretty expensive gap in your cover.

Let’s fix that.

Does this even matter

The spring and summer months = more road trips, open windows, and parking wherever you find a spot so you can enjoy that farmer’s market, the beach, water park, and all the other sights and events that make for a wonderful life. All of this increases the chances of opportunistic break-ins.

And don’t forget, with loadshedding still such a big part of our South African story, many break-ins happen during power outages when security systems are down.

So… Why isn’t your sound system automatically covered

Actually, it’s not that your sound system isn’t automatically included. That standard, factory-fitted radio that comes with your car? Ja, that’s covered by the king’s comprehensive car insurance. But! If you’ve gone and upgraded to an aftermarket system, replaced your head unit, or added extra speakers, then you should know that these aren’t covered automatically.

So, if your car is broken into and only the sound system is stolen, then you won’t be able to claim a cent. That is… Unless you’ve listed it as a specified item.

What’s that about specified items

Specifying your radio is just about the only way to make sure it has the king’s protection. In our kingdom, we regard this an optional add-on that allows you to list and insure your audio equipment separately.

The purpose is to make sure that if your upgraded system is stolen, damaged in an accident, or targeted in a smash-and-grab, you’re still financially protected.

Here’s what you’ll need to do:

  • Tell us what components you want to cover.
  • Provide receipts or a valuation if possible.
  • Let us know the replacement value.

From there, we’ll add it to your policy, and it’ll be insured for that agreed amount.

What’s covered

Our motto is that if your tech is permanently fitted to your car and has value, it can probably be covered. Okay, it’s not a super catchy motto, but it works for us.

With the king’s specified radio cover, you can insure:

  • Upgraded head units.
  • Amplifiers and subwoofers.
  • Speaker systems and tweeters.
  • Screens and in-car entertainment setups.

Our advice

If your radio system is worth more than R5,000, it’s probably worth adding specified cover. And if you’re not sure whether your existing setup is covered, now’s the time to check.

We’ll help you turn up the volume on your protection.
