South Africans love a good road trip, especially when the warmer weather rolls in. Whether you’re heading for the coast, the bush, or the berg this spring or summer, it’s important to make sure your car, and your car insurance, are both up to the task. After all, a holiday can unravel fast if you’re left stranded without cover, or a claim gets rejected due to something you didn’t update.
So, before you pack the cooler box, double-check your cover with this pre-trip insurance checklist. It’s the best way to get peace of mind before you hit the road.
Are all your drivers listed
Totally! Other drivers are covered under your policy… As long as:
- They don’t become the main driver (aka they don’t drive more than you in any given month).
- They’ve got your royal permission to take the wheel.
- They stick to all the rules in our King Price Policy Document (KPPD).
So yes, your mates can take a turn behind the wheel between pit stops and playlist battles; but if they’re doing more driving than you, it’s time to update your policy.
Do you have car hire cover added to your car insurance policy
If something goes wrong with your car on holiday, having car hire on your policy could save your trip. The king’s car hire optional add-on ensures you’ll have access to a replacement car while yours is being repaired (or replaced), so you don’t have to cancel plans or sit around waiting.
Have you added your trailer or roof box to your insurance policy
Towing a trailer, roof box, or fitting a bike rack? Make sure these accessories are either insured under your main policy or added as specified extras. If something happens to them en route or at your holiday destination, you want to be sure you’re covered.
Is your portable gear covered under your insurance policy
You know the stuff we mean… Your camera, laptop, Kindle, smartwatch, and that cool drone you’re planning to fly over the Drakensberg. These need to be insured under our portable possessions cover, and probably need to be specified for their accurate value, so that they’re covered while you’re out and about on holiday.
Ultimately, if these goodies aren’t specified and something happens, your claim might be rejected. And we just don’t want that at all.
What’s the state of your tyres and windscreen
Claims related to tyre blowouts and windscreen damage are common during long-distance travel. It’s a good idea to inspect your tyres for wear and tear, and to check your windscreen for chips or cracks before setting off. If you have the king’s amazingly affordable and supremely useful tyre and rim or scratch and dent add-ons, this is when you’d use ’em.

Do you have roadside assistance
Breakdowns are no fun at the best of times, and they’re even worse when you’re far from home. With King Price’s comprehensive car insurance, at least roadside assistance is included as part of your royal benefits. Just make sure you have the number saved and know what’s included before you leave.
The king’s got your back
Holiday mode is great, but before you get there, a quick policy check can go a long way. Make sure your cover is still right for your holiday plans, and your gear is insured.
