A word from the king

Our blog… Blah blah blah

Is it covered? The surprising things your home insurance might pay for

When we talk about the reasons for getting home insurance, we generally think about the big, obvious stuff… Like fires, burst pipes, fallen trees and runaway geysers. But did you know that your policy might also cover a few unexpected and oddly specific things?

If you’ve ever looked at the king’s policy docs (don’t lie, we know it’s page turner) and wondered whether anything on the more, ‘freak incident’ counts, then you might just be pleasantly surprised. We really have thought of just about everything, so it’s likely that the weird mishaps might be covered when you’re insured with us.

Seriously. We’ve got a few examples of things that our home insurance covers of which you might not be aware.

A trampoline crash landing

We’re not talking about an Olympic sport gone wrong. We mean when a wild gust of wind picks up the neighbour’s trampoline and flings it into your lounge window. Yes, this can happen, and yes… Your building insurance from the king could cover the damage.

We may even be able to recover the cost of your excess (that fee you pay upfront when you lodge your claim with us) from your neighbour’s insurer.

And if you’re not with us, it’s worth checking whether your policy includes this kind of protection…

Family breakages

We can do nothing about your cousin getting his feelings hurt by your opinionated auntie at the family braai. But we can be there for you if he trips and bumps your brand-new smart TV off the stand. Our royal home insurance specifically includes cover for accidental damage, so at least you’ll be able to claim for the cost of a replacement.

Accidental damage is 1 of those covers that’s only appreciated when things go sideways… So, make sure you’ve added it to your policy if you want peace of mind for life’s little oopsies, but remember it’s only for certain items like TVs and mirrors or glass that form part of any furniture.

And again, we’re sorry about your cousin’s feelings. Aunties are wild creatures.

Loadshedding sours your milk

The cost of groceries is nothing short of criminal, and once you’ve filled your fridge with around R2,000 worth of food, you want everything to stay fresh and ready for each meal. And then there’s loadshedding, which in turn can result in an extended outage.

We’ve made sure to include cover for food spoilage so that you can claim for the cost of the ruined groceries. Again, if you’re not with the king, then keep in mind that not all policies include this automatically, so if your fridge is usually stocked like a small supermarket… It’s worth asking your insurer if you’re covered.

No sign of a break-in

We treat each claim as a unique incident, so we’ll investigate to the best of our abilities. To help us finalise your claim as fast and accurately as possible, you’ll need to report the theft to the police.

The police may send officers to inspect your property and give you a police report, which we can use as part of the claims process.

The only surprise should be the cover itself

Insurance is 1 of those things you hope never to use… But it’s comforting to know just how much your policy could cover.

If you’ve never read the fine print, now’s a good time. You might find that your policy already includes protection for a few things you hadn’t thought about. Actually, we took great pride in creating policy docs that are quick to read and easy to understand. No insurance degrees required.

FAQs

1. Does King Price home insurance cover damage caused by a neighbour’s trampoline?

Yes! If a rogue trampoline takes flight and crashes through your window thanks to a wild gust of wind, the damage may be covered under your building insurance. Even better? King Price might be able to recover your excess from your neighbour’s insurer.

2. Am I covered if a power surge damages my appliances?

King Price home insurance encourages policyholders to use surge protectors and have backup power installed professionally. Without these precautions and the proper cover, you might end up footing the bill yourself.

3. What happens if someone in my family accidentally breaks something expensive in my home?

That’s where accidental damage cover saves the day. If your cousin knocks over your smart TV during a family braai (while avoiding another of aunty’s opinions), King Price’s home insurance has your back—as long as you’ve added that specific cover to your policy.

4. Can I claim for food that spoils during loadshedding?

Absolutely. If loadshedding results in an extended outage and your fridge turns into a fancy cupboard, you can claim for food spoilage with King Price (if your policy includes this benefit). It’s ideal if you regularly stock up like it’s Black Friday every week.

5. What if there’s no sign of a break-in but my stuff is missing?

Each claim is treated individually and thoroughly investigated. If there’s suspected theft, you’ll need to report it to the police and provide a police report for the claims process. King Price looks at all the facts before making a decision.
